Review; video about Michaela

8/20/15

While in class we were shown a video about a feature on a girl named Michaela who did weight lifting. The overall main idea of this video was that there was a feature on Michaela. The video started out in her house, talking to her and her mom. Then it showed some b-roll. It shows her lifting the weights.
The story was about a girl named Michaela would wasn't your average teenage girl. She lifts weight for sport with her dad a her trainer. The story was told by showing her doing what she loves and talking to her family about their thoughts.
We were then instructed to go through and storyboard the first 18 shots of the video. We drew what we saw on the screen, talked a little bit about what kinda shot it was and how it could be improved.
My process while making the storyboard was to focus on the minor details. It was harder to determine what the types of shots were. The person that created this feature kinda bent the rules. When we would see an over the shoulder shot it showed more of the woman side and not so much what she was doing in front of her. On my storyboard i also scribbled down some written details.
While drawing the storyboard out i learned that when i'm filming i need to be very careful about the shots in filming. After i was done making the storyboard i saw a pattern. The creator of this video used a lot of close up shots. Another pattern i saw was that the creator sandwiched the shots. For example... there'd be an medium shot then a close up then another medium shot. For the first 6 shots he went with the general pattern of OTS, XCU, WS x2.
If i were to do this project with the same idea at hand i would make sure that the shots are correct. Like for example shot number 15 was hard to determine what it was. It barely showed his hips up.

I would also make sure that i didn't use as many close up shots.
Something about this video i did enjoy was how they incorporated her family into the story and the home setting.
Since i've never worked in this kind of video making i hope that i can benefit from the learning process. This assignment we just did helped we realize how to shot good shots and how to make a solid story line with an interview and b-roll.
Overall the video itself was a good story line. I'm excited to get out there and make videos and learn more each time. Looking back on some of the videos i did as a freshman i realized the mistakes i made and took the mistakes and learned from them.
